Dear PS/IS 180 Families,
We are proud and excited to launch the 2019-20 school year with our incredibly talented and dedicated teaching staff and your ongoing support and partnership.
At PS/IS 180, our core values are that we intentionally operate within a Culture of CARE. This means that our classrooms are COLLABORATIVE, filled with ARTS & INQUIRY, opportunities to REFLECT, and build leadership skills through EMPOWERMENT. At Hugo Newman College Preparatory, you will find that it is a place to grow, a place to connect, and a place to belong. To kick off the year, I have prepared a read-aloud that reflects one of our most deeply held beliefs about education at PS/IS 180, and I hope that you and your children will enjoy its powerful message. Please take a moment and view it here: http://bit.ly/2U7XWHU. As the book says, “You have a place here. You have a space here. All are welcome here in our Culture of CARE.

We are starting off the school year with exciting technology upgrades. With the recent installation of 18 new Interactive Smartboards and accompanying document cameras, every instructional space from Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade is now as well- equipped as a 21st century learning environment. These amazing resources are preparing our students for college and career readiness. For a full list of additional tools to help your child prepare for the upcoming school year, please see each grade’s welcome packet complete with instructional expectations, a supply list and our Family Information Guide: http://bit.ly/2P70zLf
From excellence in academics to positive social-emotional development, we care about the whole child at PS/IS 180. Help your child succeed in school by building the habit of good attendance at an early age. Your child can suffer academically if they miss five percent of school days. Chronic absenteeism is defined as 10 absences or just one day per month, and that can happen before you know it. Both excused and unexcused absences represent lost time in the classroom and a lost opportunity to learn. To support our families with health resources, ALL enrolled children at PS/IS 180 are eligible to receive on-site FREE full medical care, at-risk mental health services, vision services, dental care, and play therapy sessions through our partnerships with the Ryan Health Center, SUNY Optometry, Columbia Dental, and NYU School of Social Work. With our community partners, we work together to ensure that our students are healthy, academically prepared, and active learners. We have 180 school days, and 180 opportunities to prepare your child for the college and career of your his/ her dream. At PS/IS 180, every day counts. Please partner with us in prioritizing your child’s attendance this year.
We believe that communication is important to a successful school experience. We invite you to stay connected with us through Bloomz technology. Bloomz is an app that can be used on a smartphone as well as the computer. When joining the school community, you can receive real time photos and videos from events happening in the building. It’s also how we schedule parent teacher conferences and invite parents to volunteer in the classroom. To join PS/IS 180, go to Bloomz.net, click ‘Join Bloomz,’ and enter the code P8WSVG to create your account. You can look forward to more information from your child’s teacher regarding classroom account access.
PS/IS 180 Hugo Newman College Preparatory truly looks better than ever! I encourage all of you to attend Back to School Night on Thursday, September 12th and take a tour. Childcare will be provided from 4:30- 7:30 PM. Come hear live jazz, mingle with community partners, and meet your son/daughter’s teachers. During the upcoming school year, I encourage you to take an active role in your child’s learning and join me at monthly Principal-Parent Coffee Chats. Parent involvement plays a critical role in our school’s success. I look forward to partnering with you to reach your child’s goals.
Our school community is strengthened by the diverse languages, cultures, and experiences of all our families. At PS/IS 180, all are welcome here! Jaguars, welcome home.
